Rocky Mountain News: A sad ending for an award winning newspaper

Fifty-five-days shy of turning 150 years old, the Rocky Mountain News printed its last edition on February 27, 2009. Falling to the victim of the US economic downturn, Rocky Mountain News owner, Scripps Interactive Newspapers Group, had finally decided that the award winning paper had to go after being put up for sale since December 2008 but without success. The paper and the website showed nothing but first class reporting and design and are sources of inspiration for all of us at Panna Institute.

I had the pleasure of meeting photographer Todd Heisler in Amsterdam who in 2006 had won the 1st prize story in the World Press Photo contest by following a deceased Marine returning home to Colorado and to his wife. An excellent photo story for such an important event and one that is the signature of the editorial team at Rocky Mountain News.

We are all saddened by this great lost. We wish all of the former staff of the Rocky Mountain News farewell and our prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

World Press Photo Seminar: Associated Press' Ed Wray on Creating a Photographic Portfolio

A seminar "How to Create a Photographic Portfolio" was held on Saturday December 13th with Ed Wray as the guest speaker. Ed Wray is currently chief photojournalist in Indonesia and East Timor for The Associated Press. He has covered many of the biggest stories in Asia over the last ten years. Working together with Panna Institute, Ed focused on several important points that really matter in making a photographic portfolio, whether you are aiming to become a photojournalist or a corporate photographer by asking some of these questions:

Vision - what is your vision as a photographer? Are you a corporate photographer or do you see yourself as a photojournalist? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Style - what style are you gravitating towards? Do you see yourself as a black and white shooter or more towards color?

Consistency - whatever you do, your portfolio needs to show that you are a consistent photographer. Even you choose to push the boundary of photography, do it consistently.

The Market: the DOs and DON'Ts - do the research to where you are offering your pictures. Some of his concerns are: Don't send fashion picture portfolio to a sports magazine. Offer them what they can use. Don't duplicate photos in your portfolio from the same event.

Presentation - there are many ways to present your photographic portfolio these days. Some of which Ed recommends is, if you are a photojournalist, is Lightstalkers, Flickr and Smugmug. Of course there is the traditional "book" that you can create as well.
